he aim of this study is the evaluation of early atherosclerosis in asthmatic patients through the measurement of carotid intima media thickness. 30 asthmatic patients in total, between the ages of 18-30, who applied to Mugla Sitki Kocman University Medical Faculty Hospital Chest Diseases Polyclinic between the dates of June 2014 and December 2014, were included in this study. And 30 healthy adults at the same age group were determined as the control group. The measurement of carotid intima media thicknesses was performed by only one specialist radiologist, who did not know about the clinical and laboratory information of the adults. The age average was 23.1±3.8 years (14 females and 16 males) for patients with asthma; and 23.0±4.0 (15 females and 15 males) for healthy adults. The average carotid intima media thickness was measured as 0.68±0.022 mm for patients with asthma and as 0.58±0.026 mm for healthy adults. There was a statistically significant difference between the average carotid intima media thicknesses of asthmatic and healthy groups (p<0.004). Consequently our study demonstrated that the carotid intima media thickness increased in asthmatic patients comparing to healthy adults. And this finding makes us think that it points the way for early atherosclerosis in asthmatic adults.
